The dream of making carbon into diamonds has long captivated the imagination of scientists and visionaries alike. Early lab diamonds produced were unsuitable for jewellery and used in engineering and manufacturing industries. As the diamond creation process improves, lab diamonds are becoming more and more commonly used in the jewellery industry.
Initially, scientists mimicked nature within the lab, where High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) were used. More recently, a new process was developed, Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD).
The older, Earth-inspired method places a carbon structure within a giant press where, in the presence of a catalyst, it’s subjected to temperatures of around 1,600 degrees Celsius and pressures of 5-6 Gigapascals to form a diamond. The comparative pressure would be similar to balancing a 747 Jumbo Jet on your fingertip to give a sense of scale!
The newer method is similar to how diamonds might form in interstellar space gas clouds. A hydrocarbon gas is pumped into a low-pressure reactor alongside hydrogen. The resulting gases are heated very hot—typically 3,000 to 4,000 degrees Celsius which causes carbon atoms to break free of their molecular bonds. Under the right conditions, small particles of carbon will settle out forming layer upon layer of diamond. The heat required as part of this process is close to the temperature of the sun!
