Frequently Asked Questions

Lab diamond FAQs - ethical impacts

What are the ethical impacts of diamond mining?

Traditional diamond mining, especially in impoverished countries, often comes with a hidden cost – the exploitation of vulnerable people. Pursuing these precious gems too frequently involves harsh working conditions, meagre wages, and a lack of basic human rights.

Why are lab-grown diamonds cheaper?

The complex process of creating a lab diamond is more expensive than a mined diamond. However, by shortening the supply chain, Diamond Lab has made enjoying high-quality diamonds much more affordable.

What are "conflict" diamonds?

Conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, are diamonds mined in war zones, often funding armed conflicts. The trade in these diamonds has fueled violence, human rights abuses, and the exploitation of vulnerable communities. Choosing ethical alternatives like lab-grown diamonds ensures you contribute to a diamond industry free from the stain of conflict.

Can I independently verify a stone?

Yes you can! We also offer customers the opportunity to have their jewellery purchase independently verified and valued for insurance purposes.

Are lab-grown diamonds "real" diamonds?

Genuine lab diamonds are chemically, optically and structurally identical to their mined counterparts.  The US Federal Trade Commission unequivocally states: “The Commission no longer defines a ‘diamond’ by using the term ‘natural’ because it is no longer accurate to define diamonds as ‘natural’ when it is now possible to create products that have the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds.’

Lab diamond FAQs - bespoke jewellery

Are lab diamonds less valuable than mined diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds typically retail for a lower cost than mined diamonds, but their value is based on the same criteria—cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.

How do I know I'm getting a real lab diamond?

At Diamond Lab, we verify all of our lab diamonds using independent third-party grading organisations.  Our large diamonds are certified by gemological institutes such as the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

An IGI grading report identifies the 4 ‘C’s and other unique characteristics of the lab diamond.  The reports also include a unique identification number that is inscribed on the diamond's girdle.

Lab diamond FAQs - environmental impact

What is the environmental impact of diamond mining?

Diamond mining casts a shadow on our planet, contributing to deforestation, habitat disruption, soil erosion, water pollution, and substantial carbon emissions. This industry's ecological impact is significant, affecting biodiversity and exacerbating climate change.

Are lab diamonds the same as synthetic stones?

No. The difference between synthetic stones and diamonds is their composition. Like mined diamonds, lab diamonds are created from carbon. Synthetic alternatives such as Moissanite or Cubic Zirconia are created from silicon carbide or zirconium oxide and cannot be classified as diamonds.

Do lab diamonds have inclusions?

Lab-grown diamonds can have inclusions, but they are often fewer and less noticeable than those found in mined diamonds. The controlled environment in a lab allows for precise production with fewer imperfections.

Can you tell the difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds?

In most cases, it's challenging even for a gemologist to distinguish between lab-grown and mined diamonds without specialised equipment. Both types share nearly identical physical and chemical properties.
